There are two opinions among the people of Sindh with regard to the origin of
Sindhi Adabi Sangat; one group holds the opinion that it was formed before
the partition while the other group says that it was started after the
partition. Dr. Adal Soomro, the present Secretary Sindhi Adabi Sangat, has
got the degree of doctorate in Sindhi Adabi Sangat. After the analysis of his
thesis on the growth of the Sangat, it has been proved that the foundation of
the Sangat had been laid before the partition of the subcontinent. According
to the statement of Ghobind Malhi, the first secretary to Sindhi Adabi Sangat,
which is the part of the thesis that "no sooner did Sindhi Adabee Sangat was
formed during March-April of 1947 than the gossip about the independence of
the sub-continent and migration of Hindus to Bharat began to gain currency.
Following persons were chosen as the office bearers of the Sangat.
Literary veterans like Lal Chand, Amar Dino Mal Jughtayani, Sobho Gianchandani
and Abdul Razaque contributed to the committee of the Sangat.
Reference from the report of monthly magazine "Naeen Dunya" is more authentic
than Gobhind Malhi's statement in Adal Soomro's thesis. In the issue of the
magazine published in August 1947, it is clearly mentioned that:
Sindhi writers' sitting was called at 'Babrs Shiprs chamber' on last Sunday.
The meeting was presided over by Prof. M.U Malkani where Lal Chand Dino Mal,
Aasanand Mamtura, cChohar Mal Hinduja, Manohar Das Koromal, Jeratti Subani,
Sobho Ghayanchandani, Gobind Malhi, Bihari Chabra, Anand Golani, Kerith
Babani, Mohan Punjabi, Bhajewan Lalwani, and many other writers were present.
In last the organization of the Sindhi writers 'Jamayat' (Association) with
the name of 'Sindhi Adabi Sangat' was established in Karachi.
It is evident from the reference cited above that the foundation of sindhi
Adabi Sangat was laid two months before the partition of subcontinent (before
the birth of Pakistan).
After the creation of Pakistan and migration of Hindus to Bharat, the Jamayat
dissolved itself. Later on in 1952, Noor-ud-din Sarki and Abdul Ghafoor Ansari
restructured the Sangat. In this way the Sangat was reborn in 1952. But these
preliminary efforts were confined to the city of Karachi only. considering the
activities of Karachi branch of the Sangat the interest developed to launch
its branches in other parts of Sindh as well.
Realizing the growing popularity of Sindhi Adabi Sangat S.A.S was invited for
the first time as a Jamayat in 'Eighteenth Sindhi Adabi Conference' on April
1956 at Larkana by Jamait-ul-shoora-e-Sindh. Taking the advantage of the
opportunity, the Sangat invited the friends for the central organization of
the Sangat. On that occasion a union committee came into being with Ayaz Qadri
as its Secretary.
